The Graveyard
We've inherited too many "design systems" that are just Figma files with outdated components. A real design system is a living product.
Principles for Longevity
1. Tokens First
Colors, spacing, typography — define these as tokens that can be updated globally. Hardcoded values are technical debt.
2. Component Ownership
Every component needs an owner. Someone responsible for keeping it updated, documented, and aligned with usage.
3. Versioning
Treat your design system like a dependency. Version it, changelog it, and communicate changes.
4. Usage Analytics
Track which components are used and which aren't. Remove unused components. Double down on heavily used ones.
Maintenance Model
Allocate 20% of design capacity to system maintenance. Not as a side project, but as core work.
